Welcome to Glasstronomy Studios’ adult art glass workshop program. This calendar details the workshops and courses offered during September and October 2023 for adults wanted to expand their glass skills.

Fall is the perfect time to engage in art glass exploration. Our project-based learning program teaches best practices and techniques that will give you a taste of the possibilities. Explore the medium in a fun and friendly environment while creating something uniquely yours. Nurture your glass skills and let your creativity flourish!

How to register

To register, we currently accept payment in person (cash, Debit, MasterCard and Visa), by email (e-transfer), or by phone (MasterCard and Visa). Please note that HST will be added to the listed fee at time of payment.

Cancellation policy: A Studio credit will be issued for cancellations up to 48 hours before start date. We regret that Studio credits will not be issued under the 48-hour threshold.

Studio credits can be applied to a future purchase of a workshop or course.

  • Course (FULL) | G196 | Beginner stained glass: Copper foil construction (September 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2023)

    Welcome to the world of traditional stained glass. Whether you are new to the art form or want to revisit it, join us in our bright, well-equipped studio for a comprehensive introduction. This four-night course covers the safe handling of materials, studio etiquette, tool usage, glass cutting and shaping, copper foil technique, soldering, panel framing, and finishing. Industry professional, Melanie Kidd, will guide you through the completion of an 8-inch x 10-inch panel that will prepare you for all you can dream up next! There are several patterns to choose from.

    Metals, chemicals, glass, and tool use included.

    When: Thursdays, September 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2023, from 7 to 10 pm
    Fee: $295 + HST (includes metals, chemicals, glass, and tool use)




  • Course | A434 | Advanced fused glass landscape (October 5, 12, 19, and 26, 2023)

    How to translate beautiful vistas, landscapes, and outdoor experiences into unique fused glass? If you have dabbled in fused glass landscapes or have taken any of our beginner fused glass landscape workshops, it’s time to take it to the next level. Join Studio landscape guru, Melanie Kidd, as she reveals how to create perspective, depth, and painterly techniques using 96 COE sheet glass, glass frit and glass powder.

    Loaded with technique, this course includes pattern creation, material sourcing, kiln firing programs, advanced glass impasto, and glass lamination.

    Participants will translate an original photograph * into a 10-inch diameter, layered, fused, laminated, and framed fused glass memory.

    96 COE base glass, glass frit, powder, stringers, substrates, frame, tool usage, and project firings included.

    * Participants must bring two to three original photographs colour printed on 8.5-inch x 11-inch paper.

    When: Thursdays, October 5, 12, 19, and 26, 2023, from 7 to 10 pm
    Fee: $445 + HST (includes 96 COE base glass, glass frit, powder, stringers, frame, tool usage, and project firings)


Workshops

  • Workshop | G281 | Stained glass sculpture: Tree of life (September 9 and 16, 2023)

    Create an organic three-dimensional sculpture with glass and wire. During this two Saturday workshop, participants will learn how to apply different metals to glass to create a 12-inch by 16-inch “Tree of Life” sculpture. In time for your Thanksgiving festivities, this project is sure to “wow” your guests as your table centrepiece. Finish your sculpture with patina or splurge for 3 karat gold plating!

    All project materials and tool usage included. Gold plating optional.

    When: Saturdays, September 9 and 16, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm
    Fee: $295 + HST (includes all project materials and tool usage) + $80 plating fee (optional)

  • Workshop (FULL) | G194S | Beginner fusing: Fused glass landscape (September 23, 2023)

    Explore the various ways glass powder and frit can be pre-fired and then layered to create stunning fused glass landscapes. Using 96 COE glass, frit, and powder, participants will create an 8-inch x 8-inch fused glass landscape displaying both depth and texture.

    All materials, tool usage, project firings, and frame included.

    When: Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm
    Fee: $195 + HST (includes all materials, tool usage, project firing, and frame)





  • Workshop | G153 | Pattern design 101 (September 30, 2023)

    Try your hand at pattern design with professional guidance. During this one-day workshop you will learn how to use design sprints and effectively brainstorm your ideas, as well as how to consider frame allowances, structural support, and break lines. Participants will produce one 11-inch x 17-inch stained glass pattern from start to finish.

    When: Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 10 am to 12 pm
    Fee: $50 + HST

  • Workshop | B206J | Beginner glass fusing: Jewellery (September 30, 2023)

    Play with colour and form as you explore the magic of fused glass. Spend the afternoon in our bright, spacious, and professionally equipped studio while creating unique fused glass jewellery. Participants will learn about glass compatibility and volume control as well as glass cutting and shaping with our expert instructor. Mini kiln firing will also be demonstrated.

    96 COE glass and dichroic, tool usage, project firing, and six bails included.

    When: Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 1 to 4 pm
    Fee: $75 + HST (includes 96 COE glass, tool usage, project firing, and six bails)

  • Workshop | G282 | Fused glass mosaic: Impressionistic style (October 21, 2023)

    What do 19th-century impressionistic paintings and fused glass mosaics have in common? Colour, contrast, and open composition of course! In this one-day workshop, participants will use coloured 96 COE glass, frit, stringers, and confetti to create a fused glass rendition of an impressionistic painting. Once fired, the fused glass art piece will be matted and framed in an 11-inch by 14-inch frame. There are several patterns to choose from.

    When: Saturday, October 21, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm
    Fee: $245 + HST (includes all materials, tool usage, pattern, project firing, and frame)

  • Workshop (FULL) | A435 | Fusing deep: Cast glass block light (October 28, 2023)

    There is nothing so satisfying as looking into glass sculpture and seeing its suspended details, layers, and colour transformed by light. Based on your feedback, we are bringing back deep casting and lap wheel polishing to our Studio learning program this season. Get ready to check off this experience from your bucket list!

    During this one-day workshop participants will learn how to cast a two-inch by two-inch by six-inch fused glass block with sheet copper, dichro-slide, and Glassline paint inclusions, using 96 COE clear 3 mm, 5 mm, and coloured sheet glass. In addition, participants will create durafibre bas relief and a duraboard damming mould.

    Once fired, participants have the option to book a lap wheel cold working session to bring their block to a brilliant shine ready to display on its battery powered light base.

    When: Saturday, October 28, 2023, from 10 am to 4 pm + optional one hour lap wheel session

  • Workshop | I441 | Intermediate glass fusing: Big bad bowl (November 4, 2023)

    Both serviceable and stunning, these big bad beauties boast geometric patterns, bold form, and custom colour combinations! Participants will spend the day mastering uniform shape cutting with The Morton System, large circle cutting with a Toyo Supercutter, and multi-stage kiln firing to create large vessels.

    4 sq. ft. 96 COE clear base glass included.
    Project glass and firings are à la carte.
